How do I know if my exhaust fan vents to the outside?

The most reliable check is to trace the duct from the fan to its termination point. From inside the roof cavity, follow the flexible duct from the fan to where it ends. From outside, look for a capped penetration on the roof surface or a louvred outlet on the eaves near the bathroom. If neither is visible, the duct likely ends inside the cavity.

Is it illegal to vent a bathroom fan into the roof cavity?

The building code requires wet-area exhaust ventilation to exhaust to the outside. For new construction and significant renovations this is enforced at inspection. For older homes that were built or retrofitted before or without enforcement, non-compliant venting is common and is not automatically illegal to continue, but it is a mould risk you should fix.

Can I just add a vent hole myself?
