Laundry mould is one of the most consistent problem areas in Illawarra homes, and consistently underestimated. Most homeowners think of laundries as practical utility rooms: the mould on the ceiling or behind the tub gets wiped down occasionally, and that is considered enough. But laundries combine high moisture output from appliances, limited ventilation in many Illawarra homes, and Illawarra’s already-elevated coastal humidity into one of the most challenging rooms in the house to keep dry. Once mould is established in a laundry, surface cleaning rarely resolves it without ventilation improvements. According to NSW Fair Trading, home appliances safety, appliances including dryers must be installed and vented according to manufacturer requirements.

Laundry mould recurs because the room generates substantial moisture from washing machines, dryers and wet clothing, and most Illawarra laundries have inadequate ventilation to clear it. The fix is a combination of appliance-level checks (particularly dryer venting) and mechanical ventilation improvements, followed by treatment of existing growth. Surface cleaning without ventilation improvement will not hold.
Why laundries are mould-prone
The moisture sources in a typical laundry are more concentrated than in any other room in the house:
- A single washing machine cycle releases moisture from wet clothing in the spin cycle and from the door seal area during and after the wash
- A vented clothes dryer, if not vented correctly to outside, releases the equivalent of several litres of water vapour per cycle directly into the room
- Wet clothing hung to dry indoors (very common in Illawarra homes without space or weather to dry outside) releases that same moisture load gradually over hours
- The laundry tub and any hand-washing activity add moisture to the room air
In a laundry with no window or only a small fixed louvre, no mechanical exhaust ventilation, or an exhaust fan that vents into the ceiling void rather than outside, this moisture has nowhere to go. It accumulates in the room air until relative humidity reaches a point where condensation and mould growth begin on the coldest surfaces.

Appliance-level checks (washer, dryer, tub)
Washing machine: check the door seal on front-loaders for mould growth in the rubber gasket folds. This is extremely common and a significant spore source in the room. Clean the seal regularly with a mild cleaning solution, leave the door open after each cycle, and run a hot drum-clean cycle regularly. Check the drain hose connection at the back: a loose connection drips slowly under the machine without being obvious.
Dryer: the most important laundry check. A vented dryer (as opposed to a condenser dryer) must be ducted to outside. A dryer vented into the room, into a laundry cupboard, or into the ceiling void is placing the equivalent of a large humidifier in the space. If your laundry has persistent ceiling mould above the dryer, this is the first thing to check. Never leave dryer venting disconnected from the outside duct; even a partially blocked external vent forces some exhaust back into the room. Do not reconnect a venting system yourself if there is any uncertainty about the duct route.
Condenser dryer: condenser dryers collect moisture internally and require regular emptying of the water reservoir. The reservoir itself and the condenser unit develop mould over time if not cleaned. Check the manufacturer instructions for cleaning frequency.
Laundry tub: inspect the tap fittings and the tub-wall junction for deteriorated silicone or sealant. A slow drip from a tap fitting runs down behind the tub cabinet onto the floor, where it stays wet and feeds mould. Replace any deteriorated fittings.

Ventilation fixes that actually help
External exhaust fan: the most impactful single improvement for laundry mould. A properly sized exhaust fan, wired to run automatically when the laundry light or dryer is operating, removes moisture-laden air from the room continuously during use. The fan must vent through the wall or ceiling directly to outside, not into the roof void. A roof void is not a moisture disposal pathway.
Improving existing airflow: if a laundry has a window, opening it during and after appliance use is a meaningful improvement over a sealed room. In Illawarra winter conditions, when outside air is cold but dry, this is more effective than leaving it sealed.
Cross-ventilation: where the laundry layout allows, creating airflow from the laundry to another ventilated area (a hallway, through to a kitchen window) improves air exchange beyond what a single exhaust fan achieves alone.

When to escalate to remediation
Surface cleaning of laundry mould (wiping ceiling and wall patches with a cleaning solution) is a temporary measure that deals with visible growth. It does not address the conditions that are maintaining the growth, and mould returns within weeks in a persistently humid laundry.
Escalate to professional mould remediation when:
- Mould has spread beyond the ceiling to multiple walls
- Mould recurs within a month of surface treatment
- There is mould inside wall cavities or behind appliances (often found when appliances are moved)
- The laundry ceiling paint has failed or is bubbling, suggesting deeper moisture penetration

Why does mould keep coming back in my laundry ceiling after I clean it?
The moisture conditions that produced the growth are still present. Without fixing the ventilation source (usually an unvented or under-ventilated dryer, or a laundry with no exhaust to outside), moisture continues to accumulate and feed new growth on the treated surface. The treatment addresses what is there; the ventilation fix prevents what comes next.
Can I use anti-mould paint in the laundry to stop it recurring?
Anti-mould paint contains fungicide additives that slow surface mould growth. On a surface where the underlying moisture conditions are well managed, it can extend the time before growth reappears. Applied to a surface in a room where moisture conditions are unchanged, it delays but does not prevent recurrence. Is the mould in my washing machine drum a health risk?
Mould growing on the washing machine seal and drum can, in theory, transfer to clothing being washed. For most people this is more of a hygiene concern than a significant health risk, but for households with immunocompromised members or young children, it is worth addressing. Regular cleaning of the drum and seal, running a hot cycle with a drum cleaner, and leaving the door open between washes are the standard maintenance steps.
My laundry is internal with no windows. What are my options?
An internal laundry without windows needs mechanical extraction as its only meaningful moisture removal path. A properly sized exhaust fan to outside is the primary fix. If the wall thickness makes external venting difficult, a ceiling-mounted fan venting through the roof void to a dedicated eave louvre (not just into the void) is an alternative. Do not vent into the roof void without a proper termination; this just relocates the moisture problem.
Should I use a condenser dryer or a vented dryer?
A condenser dryer in a laundry without adequate external venting is usually the better choice compared to a vented dryer running without proper external ducting. A condenser dryer collects moisture internally rather than releasing it into the room. The trade-off is that you need to empty and clean the condenser regularly. A vented dryer with a properly installed external duct is also fine; the problem is vented dryers used without proper ducting.
