Kitchen cabinet mould almost always follows a slow moisture source: a dripping tap fitting, a dishwasher connection that seeps when the machine runs, or a cold external wall behind a pantry. Understanding which pattern applies to your kitchen determines the correct fix. Kitchen cabinet mould almost always has a specific moisture source behind it: a slow plumbing leak, a dishwasher hose seeping when the machine runs, or condensation on a cold external wall behind a pantry. Cleaning the visible mould without fixing the moisture source is a waste of time. The sequence is: find and fix the moisture source (often a plumber), then assess whether the cabinet material can be cleaned or needs replacing, then treat and verify.
Where kitchen mould shows up
Kitchen mould is concentrated in a few predictable locations:
Under the kitchen sink: the most common site. Warm, dark, with multiple plumbing connections and often the dishwasher drain. Any slow drip from the tap body, supply connections, drain trap or dishwasher hose connection runs down onto the cabinet base and stays there.
Behind the dishwasher: the dishwasher drain hose and fill line connections are where slow leaks originate. Water migrates under the dishwasher and out to adjacent base cabinets. Dishwasher-related cabinet mould often appears in the cabinet next to the dishwasher rather than directly behind it.
Pantry cabinet against an external wall: a pantry against a south-facing or west-facing external wall stays cool. In humid conditions, the wall behind the pantry and the cabinet back and sides are persistently cooler than the room air, promoting condensation. Mould appears on the back wall of the cabinet and on shelves against the external wall.
Beneath or behind the splashback tiles: failed grout or silicone at the splashback-benchtop junction allows water from cooking and washing up to penetrate behind the tiles and into the wall cavity or cabinet back.
Under the sink around the waste connection: the compression fitting where the sink waste pipe enters the cabinet side wall is a common drip point, as is the connection at the P-trap base.

The plumber-first rule

First, cleaning mould in a wet cabinet achieves nothing. If the drip or seep is ongoing, mould re-establishes on a cleaned surface within weeks. The cleaning effort is wasted until the source is dry.
Second, identifying the exact source of a slow leak requires checking connections under load, which is not a surface inspection. A plumber checks connections while the tap runs or the dishwasher cycles, which reveals seeps that are invisible when dry.

Cleaning vs replacing cabinetry
This is the decision that significantly affects cost and outcome.
Painted solid timber or MDF with surface-only mould (no swelling, no soft spots): cleaning is possible. Remove the cabinet contents, dry thoroughly, treat the affected surfaces with an appropriate cleaning solution, allow to dry completely, and inspect for any structural softness that might indicate deeper penetration.
Particleboard (chipboard) or MDF cabinet base or carcass that is wet: these materials absorb water readily and swell irreversibly. Swollen particleboard that has been wet for more than a few days does not dry back to its original condition and integrity. It retains moisture internally and remains a mould substrate. The honest assessment for wet particleboard is that replacement is more reliable than cleaning. This is the most common outcome under kitchen sinks.

How do I know if the dishwasher is causing the mould?
Run the dishwasher and then open the adjacent base cabinets while the machine is still running its drain cycle. Is pantry mould against an external wall a structural problem?
Not necessarily. Pantry mould on a cold external wall is typically a condensation problem rather than a structural failure. Why does my new kitchen already have mould under the sink?
A new kitchen with under-sink mould has a plumbing issue: a connection that is not fully sealed or a fitting that is weeping. New installations can have connection faults that are not apparent until the system has been in use for some weeks. This is a plumbing warranty issue and should be raised with the installer.
