Why the December to March window is the risk period
The summer mould surge in Illawarra homes is driven by the convergence of several factors:
Warm temperatures. Mould growth rates increase with temperature up to around 30 degrees Celsius for most common indoor species. Summer indoor temperatures in Illawarra homes without air conditioning frequently reach this range.

Reducing summer humidity mould comes down to controlling four variables:
Lever 1: indoor moisture generation. Dehumidifier. For a persistently humid room of up to 30 square metres, a portable dehumidifier with a capacity of around 10-12 litres per day is typically adequate in Illawarra summer conditions. Larger open-plan spaces need more capacity. Key: choose a model rated for warm conditions (some cheaper models reduce capacity significantly above 26 degrees Celsius).
Bathroom exhaust fan. The existing exhaust fan in most Illawarra homes is often undersized or vents into the ceiling void rather than outside. Daily and weekly routines that work
Daily: run exhaust fans during and for 15 minutes after every shower; cover pots when cooking; do not dry washing indoors; check and empty the dehumidifier reservoir if used without a continuous drain.
Weekly: wipe down bathroom surfaces and check bathroom grout and silicone for early-stage growth. Surface mould caught early is a ten-minute job. Surface mould left for a month is a half-day job. Wipe condensation from windows in the morning before it runs into window tracks and frames.
Monthly: check bathroom exhaust fan is running at full capacity (hold a tissue near the grille; it should be drawn toward the fan firmly). Check that the dryer duct is not blocked or kinked. Inspect under-sink areas in kitchen and bathroom for any slow drips.
