DIY Mould Test Kit Results: How to Interpret Them and What They Don't Tell You

DIY mould test kits, the petri dish, sampling card, or swab type sold at hardware stores and online for $15 to $60, are one of the most frequently misinterpreted tools in the consumer indoor air quality market. People buy them seeking a yes/no answer about whether they have a mould problem, and the results they get are almost always misunderstood in ways that either create false confidence or unnecessary alarm. All DIY petri dish mould kits will show positive growth in any indoor or outdoor environment because mould spores are everywhere. The result is not a reliable indicator of a mould problem, only species identification and comparison to an outdoor control can determine that. The kits have no negative result: even a “clean” house will grow mould in a petri dish left open for 48 hours in the Illawarra’s ambient spore-rich coastal air.

What DIY Mould Kits Actually Measure

The Petri Dish (Culture) Kit

The most common type: a petri dish pre-filled with agar growth medium (typically MEA, malt extract agar or similar) that you open in the room or on the surface you want to test for 1-2 hours, then seal and leave at room temperature for 3-7 days. Any mould spores that settled on the agar will germinate and grow into visible colonies.

The fundamental problem: Mould spores are in every indoor and outdoor environment, globally, without exception. The Illawarra’s coastal humid air carries particularly high ambient spore counts. A petri dish opened in any room, including a recently professionally remediated, mould-free room, will grow mould colonies. This is expected and normal.

The instruction leaflets for most kits acknowledge this, then direct you to count the colonies and compare to a chart: “fewer than 3 colonies = low growth,” “more than 6 colonies = high growth” or similar. These charts are not scientifically validated against any health standard and do not account for the ambient spore environment, the specific species present, or whether the mould in the dish came from a building problem or simply settled from outdoor air.

The Swab Kit with Laboratory Analysis

A more expensive variant provides a swab and instructions to wipe a specific surface, then mail the swab to a laboratory for analysis. This can identify what mould species are present on that specific surface. It is more useful than a petri dish kit, but still has significant limitations:

  • It only tests the specific surface swabbed, not the air, not other surfaces, not what’s inside the wall
  • Identifying a common mould species (Cladosporium, Aspergillus) on a surface does not tell you whether this is a problem, these species are present on virtually every surface in any coastal home

How to Correctly Read a Petri Dish Result

If you have already run a petri dish kit and are looking at the results:

What the colonies look like:

  • White or grey fuzzy growth: typically Aspergillus, Penicillium, or Cladosporium, all extremely common in Illawarra indoor air
  • Black or dark green colonies: could be Cladosporium (very common, low concern) or in rare cases Stachybotrys (high concern, but Stachybotrys requires specific wetted cellulose substrate to grow and rarely grows on open agar in normal conditions)
  • Pink or red colonies: Serratia or other bacteria/yeast
  • Any green colonies: likely Trichoderma or Aspergillus species

What the count means, the correct interpretation: A petri dish result is only meaningful if you have also run a control: an identical petri dish opened for the same duration, in the same room, at the same time as the surface sample, or outside for outdoor baseline comparison. Without a control, the number of colonies tells you nothing about whether your indoor environment has elevated mould levels compared to normal ambient levels.

If your indoor petri dish has significantly more colony growth than an outdoor control run simultaneously, particularly if certain colony types appear indoors but not outdoors, this is a flag for further professional investigation.

What DIY Kits Cannot Tell You

They cannot identify mould in hidden areas: A petri dish or swab tests what is accessible to you. The most serious mould problems, behind walls, in roof voids, in HVAC systems, beneath flooring, will not be detected.

They cannot quantify spore concentrations in the air: Petri dish kits measure what settles, not what is airborne. Professional air quality testing measures spores per cubic metre, the standard used in health and remediation contexts.

They cannot identify mycotoxins: Petri dish and swab kits identify organisms, not their toxins. Whether a mould colony is producing mycotoxins requires specialist testing.

They cannot diagnose the moisture source: Identifying mould (which is everywhere, always) does not help you find where water is entering your building. A moisture meter and thermal imaging assessment is needed for that.

They cannot form a basis for insurance claims or legal action: An accredited laboratory report from a professional air quality assessment, with chain-of-custody documentation, is required for insurance disputes, tribunal proceedings, and landlord-tenant matters. A DIY kit result is not admissible evidence in any meaningful sense.

When DIY Testing Has Some Value

  • As a very rough initial screen to decide whether the musty smell in a room is likely mould or something else
  • As a curiosity tool before investing in professional testing
  • To confirm (imprecisely) that a surface you visually identified as mouldy is growing organisms, not just stained

For any situation where the result actually matters, health concerns, legal disputes, insurance claims, pre-purchase decisions, or post-remediation verification, use professional testing.

When to Upgrade to Professional Testing

Book a professional mould inspection and air quality test when:

  • A household member is experiencing respiratory symptoms, allergies, or headaches that worsen at home
  • You can smell mould but cannot see it
  • You have recently had a water damage event
  • You are buying or selling a property
  • You need documentation for an insurance claim or legal matter
  • Post-remediation verification is required

Professional testing uses calibrated air sampling equipment, trained assessors, accredited laboratories, and comparison to outdoor controls, the combination that DIY kits cannot replicate.

FAQs

The kit instructions say zero to two colonies is normal. Does that mean I’m fine?

Not necessarily. The colony threshold numbers in most kit instructions are not validated against any health standard and do not account for the ambient mould environment in your specific location. In the Illawarra’s coastal air, two colonies in any indoor space in summer is genuinely low, but it still doesn’t confirm the absence of a building mould problem if one exists.

Can I use a petri dish kit to confirm that professional mould remediation worked?

Black colonies from a petri dish kit are most likely Cladosporium, very common, very widespread, and not typically a significant health risk at normal ambient levels. True Stachybotrys chartarum (black mould) grows poorly on petri dish agar and is rarely found in kit culture results even when it is present in a building.
